Anglesey Grazing Animals Partnership

The AGAP Quality Mark - A Chance To Buy Delicious Local Produce

AGAP livestock is grazed for the benefit of nature, in order to enhance local landscapes and habitats. Grazing on Anglesey’s heathland, wildflower meadows, coastal grassland, fen and saltmarsh is sustainable and also provides high-quality produce including beef, lamb, game, honey and wool.

Recent research at Exeter University demonstrates that meat from animals managed extensively and grown slowly on biodiverse pastures is high in Omega 3. Responsibly-grazed meat has significant health benefits, and taste tests have shown that it has a great flavour too.

The AGAP brand was launched at the Anglesey Show in August 2010, with Shorthorn heathland beef and tidal grassland lamb from member farms being sold through Valley Butchers. Karl Jones’s shop has sold meat from Anglesey farms in the past, but he believes that nature-friendly grazing management and the AGAP trademark gives the local produce a real identity, and is bound to increase demand.

Produce from the AGAP brand will soon be available more widely – even as far afield as London – but the local food link will remain. As Henry Buller of the Rural Economy and Land Use programme explains: “Locality should be about the quality of the place and the relationship between the agricultural and ecological landscape.” The local market will always be of immediate importance.

Supply depends on when animals are ready, so produce is seasonally available. Information on availability and offers is updated frequently here on the website.

What is Anglesey Wildlife Friendly Produce?

Anglesey Wildlife Friendly Produce

The Anglesey Wildlife Friendly Produce brand has been developed with AGAP farmers to promote locally-sourced food and to benefit the island’s economy. Anglesey wildlife friendly produce is AGAP Certified, which means that our beef and lamb comes exclusively from traditional breeds and crosses, born and raised on the island.

The certificate shows that all produce is from animals whose grazing has been managed for the benefit of wildlife. It complies with strict criteria, which have been designed to reflect our high conservation and welfare standards.
